Let’s talk about what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I know this is a big topic, but I’ll keep it simple and clear for you.
If someone asked, “What does it mean to be a Christian?” you might hear a few options:
Believing Jesus was born, lived, died, and rose again.
Accepting that God became a man in Jesus to bring us back to Him.
Receiving Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him.
All of these are important, but I think the best answer is all of them together. You need the history, the theology, and the personal connection. Without that personal relationship, can we really call it Christianity?
So, what does a “personal relationship with Jesus” mean? It’s not just about knowing facts or following rules. It’s deeper than that.
The Bible says, “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:14). This means you need the Holy Spirit to truly understand it. It’s not something you can figure out just with your mind.
Let’s break it down:
Relationship – This is about connection. But it’s not like connecting with a thing or an idea. It’s personal. It’s about knowing someone, not just knowing about them.
Personal – How close does it need to be? Think about your closest relationships. Maybe it’s like the bond between a husband and wife. The Bible uses that as an example in Ephesians 5:22-33. It’s intimate, deep, and real.
Jesus Christ – This isn’t about history books or old stories. Jesus is alive today. He’s not just a figure from the past. He’s the living Lord who wants to connect with us. Romans 8:9 talks about His Spirit living in us. That’s how close this relationship is.
It’s not just about believing in what Jesus did. It’s about letting Him live in you and through you. Colossians 1:27 says, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” That’s the heart of it. He’s in us, and we’re new because of Him (2 Corinthians 5:17).
I know this might sound hard to explain, especially to someone who hasn’t experienced it. But that’s okay. We just share what we know, trusting the Holy Spirit to do the rest. It’s about inviting Jesus into your life, letting Him change you, and walking with Him every day.
That’s what being a Christian is all about—a real, living relationship with Jesus. It’s not just religion or rules. It’s personal, and it’s life-changing.
